This type of specimen is a multi-generational pseudomorph, meaning that one mineral has replaced another over time while preserving the original shape. Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening in this geological story: Gypsum formed first. Malachite replaced the gypsum — preserving the original gypsum crystal shape but altering the mineral itself. Chrysocolla partially or fully coated or replaced the malachite — adding new color and composition. Quartz formed as a final layer — often as fine druzy (tiny sparkling) crystals coating the surface.
